Novasredes means new nets (quite literally a net) in Portuguese and aludes to the fact that the project revolves around building infrastructure for future-focused networks with the following in mind:
One of the narrow goals of novasredes, in specific, is the trunking service. This is something I personally dreamt up and have experimented with in my lab at home but something I would like to test with the greater technical community.
The wider goals are not specific to novasredes but rather show how it can play a part in extending existing experimental and resilient networks, such as:
Personally I have always had a keen interest in network communications and have, over the last few years, built up quite a knowledge base on the subject. Along with that I also finally have the private funding (myself) in order to build these projects in a way that I want to - rather than being directed by some grant program which tends to really curtail what can be done and can be often pretty boring to be quite honest with you.
A lot of the technology and products involved (there isn’t just “one”), they have become relatively cheap and can be shipped from different vendors all over the world into South Africa. So long as they are standards compliant with the standards required to perform the functions they need - then they are sufficient. The cheapness of such products and also accessibility of them due to the large amount of open source software and support for the popular varieties of these products has meant that undertaking such projects like this is relatively easy for anyone to join in.
